What an Eyesore! 5 Tips to Help with Eye Strain

July 24th, 2017

Blue light is everywhere now. If you go back 100 years, the only blue light you would find is outside with the sun’s rays. In our modern world, it’s nearly everywhere at nearly every time of day. What is it, you ask? Blue light is a color visible to the human eye in the light spectrum with the shortest, high energy light waves. Where is it now? When you’re not outside or sitting next to a window during the day, blue light can be found in television screens, computer screens, cellular phones, electronic devices, and even LED and fluorescent lights. When we are exposed to this much light throughout the day for extended periods of time, our eyes can become strained, becoming dry, itchy, and watery, causing headaches, and even causing physical and mental fatigue. While research on any health effects of prolonged exposure to blue light is lacking, there are claims and theories that long amounts of time with blue light can cause vision loss, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, and even cancer. So what can you do to maintain eye health and help prevent any long-term effects of extended blue light exposure?

Turn that Off!

Simple enough! Take a break from watching YouTube on your phone or that second episode on your Netflix TV binge. Take a nap. Take a walk. When we remove our eyes from our devices, we help relax our eyes from seeing the constant blue light flashing through those screens. You can always come back to it later. “But what do I do if I work in front of a computer all day?”

20-20-20

The 20-20-20 rule will help you at work. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds.

Massage away

If you’re feeling that your eyes are extra bothered, try rubbing them gently for 30 seconds. You can also rub the area under the eyes and the temples to help relieve built-up pressure and strain.

Color Me Blue and Push Me Away

Adjust your screen’s resolution and brightness to match the surrounding light levels and make sure you’re not too close to the screen. Just listen to your grandma’s voice in your head reminding you not to sit too close.
