Don’t Shave and Help Save a Life

Are you familiar with Movember, also known as Men’s Health Awareness Month or No Shave November? Movember is a growing trend among men, and women more recently, during the month of November where men grow a moustache, or even let their facial hair grow, both of which raise awareness for men’s health. In particular, Movember focuses on prostate, testicular, and mental health. While Movember is trying to provide more knowledge about prevention, there are still many who don’t know how to even check for signs which can help with early detection and prevention.

Prostate health is the second most common health issue in men here in America.  Although it’s more common in men who are older, it’s important to remember or find out about family history. It is recommended that most men talk with their doctors about getting a PSA test at age 50. If you’re African American or have a family history, it is recommended you begin those talks at 45. A PSA test is a routine blood test that measures the levels of prostate specific antigen in your blood stream. Common symptoms affecting prostate health include frequent and/or painful urination especially at night, blood in urine or semen, and difficulty in having an erection. It’s important that you talk to your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms. You can also take prostate supplements to help support the strength of your prostate gland.

Testicular health isn’t necessarily the most talked about, however, it is the most common health concern in younger men between 15 and 34. It’s more likely for a man to experience issues if their testes didn’t descend at birth or if a family member had history of health issues. You can perform a self-exam regularly. You’re looking for any tenderness, any changes in shape or size, or even any lumps that you don’t remember feeling. If you notice any of these, remain calm and schedule an appointment for an exam. If you catch irregularities early enough, doctor’s can help you prevent issues later in life. Turmeric and boswellia are also shown to help support testicular health issues.

When it comes to men’s health, one of the biggest statistics is this: while 1 in every 4 adults in America experiences a mental health problem in a year, 3 of every 4 suicidal acts are by men. This statistic doesn’t have to remain. We can help our fellow man. How? The Movember Foundation wants us to talk, ask, listen, encourage action, and check in. It’s so simple, but for anyone who has ever struggled, asking for help is usually the biggest obstacle. Many of us tell our friends that we are there for them if they were ever in need, but when help is needed, it’s hardly ever comfortable to ask. Even if you can’t talk with someone you know, there are organizations with people who want to help, such as the Lifeline Crisis Chat. If you’re not the one struggling, look for resources to learn how to talk with someone who is. Even though mental health isn’t cured by taking supplements, taking fish oils, b-complex vitamins, and vitamin D can help.
