Maintaining New Year’s Resolutions

January 29th, 2018

If you’re like a majority of Americans, some of your main resolutions for the new year include losing weight, getting in shape, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Great! Now, how do you go about doing those things? There are several ways in which to achieve a new healthy lifestyle, but just stating that you want one isn’t enough. You have to plan out how you’re going to achieve it. Your long-term goal is to be healthy, but in order to get there, you have to break down how you’re going to get there: exercise every day, start eating fruits and vegetables only, take your daily vitamins, get more sleep, etc. The best way to ensure that you achieve these new goals is to start small rather than thinking about the end goal. Here are a few ways you can motivate yourself to meet your resolutions.

KEEP YOUR GOALS SMALL

Let’s just say you wanted to be an astronaut. How do you go about doing that? One of NASA’s minimum requirements is to have at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. If you just graduated from high school, your first step is to get one of those degrees, then go from there. The same process should apply to most, if not all, of your goals in life. Looking to lose weight but you love having a Taco Bell Chalupa every night? Try only eating there once a week; you’ll get your Taco Bell craving weekly and work on eating healthier food during the rest of the week. Whoops! Did you just give in to your craving? Not to worry, there are supplements that could help, such as Irwin Naturals Maximum Strength 3-in-1 Carb Blocker.

SET A DATE

Giving yourself a time by which to have your goals achieved gives you that extra momentum to make sure it actually does get done. We all have that friend that wants to lose weight “before I go on vacation to *insert tropical place here*” because they want to feel great in that swimsuit. They’re giving themselves that ultimatum to lose weight and feel great…or don’t. For some, there’s a problem with that goal: sometimes that vacation can be months or even a full year away from that decision. While you should keep that end goal, you should break it down into smaller, more achievable time frames. Instead of, “I need to lose 40 pounds before August,” try, “I want to lose 5 pounds by the end of February.” Anyone should be able to lose 5 pounds within 1 month. Just duplicate that goal 8 times until you get to that 40-pound end game. BE ACCOUNTABLE

Peer pressure has a negative connotation, but you can turn that on its head when you’re looking for help or accountability for your goals. Want to exercise more? Ask a friend to work out with you. It will be more fun, plus you’ll have someone there to motivate you to be your best self. Want to eat healthier? Post everything you ingest onto social media. Yes, you might be labeled as “one of those people that post their food,” but you’re creating a way for yourself to ensure healthy eating.
