Coconut Oil May Protect Prostate

August 13th, 2008

A very common condition among older men, prostatic hyperplasia results in enlargement of the prostate gland or congestion within the gland, either of which can worsen over time and lead to difficulty with urination and sexual problems.

A study published last year suggests that fatty acids in coconut oil may play a protective role in prostate health, reducing the size and weight increases associate with testosterone-induced prostatic hyperplasia.

An abstract of the study is here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17637195

Coconut oil tastes great and is easy to use in the kitchen as a replacement for butter, shortening or other cooking oils. Coconut oil is also a very healthy type of fat in other respects too, since it’ s unlikely to raise LDL cholesterol and is full of energizing MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides).
