‘Tis the season to try healthy kitchen alternatives

November 30th, 2015

Coming into fall, thoughts turn to family, and seasonal holiday recipes.  This is the time of year when we celebrate at family gatherings with good food. And we mean lots of good food, as I am sure you all have come to notice after the Thanksgiving weekend!  Using healthy kitchen alternatives in the face of potential excess can be a challenge, but All Star Health makes it easy!

One way to create healthy but tasty choices is to look for alternate options for flours and other baking ingredients.  Allstarhealth.com recently added Bob’s Red Mill products to the website.  They product many different items for your healthy kitchen alternatives including flours and baking mixes.  These are high quality, small batch productions of stone ground flours. They produce a range of flours including options that are suitable for those who have gluten sensitivity or wish to avoid traditional wheat flour carbohydrates. As an example, they produce a gluten-free ‘all purpose’ baking flour, suitable for cakes, cookies and pastry from Garbanzo Bean Flour, Potato Starch, Tapioca Flour, White Sorghum Flour and Fava Bean Flour. These gluten free alternates produce high quality baked goods that can be indistinguishable from their wheat flour counterparts in many traditional recipes.

Other gluten free flour options to consider for baking are Almond, Coconut and Tapioca flours.

In an earlier blog we looked at alternates to sugar and some of these are excellent alternatives to use in baking. When making cakes, the texture of the ‘sugar’ substitute can cause issues with the end result so it is a good idea to look at options that have similar properties when baked. One of the sweeteners that seems to produce good results in cake baking is Xylitol and replacing some sugar with stevia or other sweeteners that do not have good baking properties on their own is a good way to reduce sugar intake while still maintaining good baking quality.

If you like a little chocolate in your baked goods, Allstarhealth.com offers some organic cocoa powders from Now and Sunfresh foods. Cacao nibs are also an excellent substitute for chocolate chips and Carob can be used in place of cocoa if you are looking to reduce your total fat intake.

Allstarhealth.com would like to take this opportunity to wish all our valued customers a happy, healthy and relaxed holiday season!
