Curcumin the Powerhouse Herb

March 18th, 2015

Many of us are familiar with Turmeric, the bright yellow culinary spice used primarily in western cooking dishes such as curry.  Turmeric is derived from the underground stems of a plant called Curcuma Longa which is a member of the ginger family. Many people, especially those who love curry are familiar with Turmeric, but what about Curcumin? Curcumin is actually the most active ingredient in Turmeric. This powerhouse herb has been supplemented and used to assist with a wide range of conditions for years due to its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties.

 What is it used for?

Although Curcumin is a supplement and not prescribed, there are still many clinical studies underway exploring curcumin as a source of treatment in diseases such as Alzheimer’s. As mentioned before curcumin/turmeric has been used for years as an antioxidant to fight against free radicals, its antibacterial properties work hard to strengthen the immune system. It also increases cardiovascular health, and its anti-inflammatory properties reduce pain and inflammation. Curcumin is also said to assist with weight loss by helping to stabilize blood sugar levels.

What to look for in a quality Curcumin supplement:

Recommended doses for Curcumin are usually between 200-500 mg.  However, first speak with your physician before choosing the correct dosage for you. Look for supplements containing black pepper, or consider taking a black pepper supplement such as bioperine.  Black pepper/ bioperine increase curcumin absorption which is imperative if you want to yield curcumin benefits. You also want to look for products that contain 95% standardization of curcuminoids.
