Fighting The Flu and Colds

February 28th, 2020

Love is in the air during the month of February  – BUT so is the flu, and colds, and other scary germs. Everyone is coughing and sneezing around you, either at work, at school, or in the grocery store.  Aside from getting a yearly flu shot and washing our hands – there are other precautions and steps we can take to help prevent sickness and/or the severity of it. One of those options is using supplements and vitamins to help our immune system be as strong as possible so it can fight off any germs we do come in contact with.

Here are FIVE vitamins you can take to help combat seasonal colds and flu symptoms:

  1. Vitamin C: This is the original ‘go to’ vitamin. While it won’t safeguard you from catching anything, research has shown that it does help ease the severity and time of whatever your body is plagued with. Vitamin C can be consumed in fruits like oranges or can be taken orally by liquid, capsule, tablet, or even gummy. (My kids really like the Rainbow Light Gummy Vitamin C Slices Tangy Orange!)
  2. Elderberry: Those who take Elderberry with the onset of symptoms boast that this antioxidant rich flowering plant has amazing, almost magical abilities; however, most research shows it only does about the same as Vitamin C – and that is aiding to cut down on how severe it is and how long you have it. Finding whole elderberries can be difficult. You won’t find them at your local grocery store. Most consume it in a syrup, pill, or gummy.
  3. Age Garlic Extract: Garlic may sound like quite an odd one to mention, as it is often left out. Those smelly little white cloves actually help our bodies in so many different ways. Multiple research studies have shown the health benefits of garlic for blood pressure and heart health. Since garlic helps support a healthy inflammation response, it also can cut down your down time. (If you really hate the smell of it, there are multiple odorless garlic options!)
  4. Probiotics: Another oddball in the crowd, probiotics can help in so many different aspects – not just for stomach issues! A key thing probiotics do is help to restore the balance of microbes. Some studies suggest that restoring the proper balance of these microbes helps with colds and flus. (They even make probiotics for kids!)
  5. Zinc: Zinc is a trace essential element.  Zinc has been shown to help decrease how long your cold lasts. It’s recommended to take zinc lozenges every one to three hours for 3 to 14 days if you catch a cold.

Our bodies and health are all different. Some vitamins and supplements can interfere with certain medications – always talk to a health provider before starting a vitamin regimen. Some formulas exists that combine some of these ingredients, such as Elderberry & Zinc, as well as various other immune supporting formulas. Finding what works for you will help combat against colds and flus you’re exposed to.
