Finding the Best Deodorant/Antiperspirant

October 11th, 2013

Finding the right deodorant or antiperspirant can be tricky. The hard part is that when it doesn’t work, everyone around you notices. Some deodorants can also be too dry, too slimy, or just not have the right scent to suit you. The variety of options can be overwhelming, but hopefully this will help you feel more confident in deciding on a deodorant that is best for you.

Application

Another decision is based on your preference of application. There are four main options: roll on, spray, stick, and cream. Spray is typically the fastest to dry, to help prevent deodorant marks on a dark shirt. Stick application is the “driest” from initially, but still requires caution when putting on a dark shirt. Roll on application can be great to ensure full coverage. Cream is the form originally used as deodorant. If you’re looking for something natural and original, a natural cream may be right for you. For the most part, the decision on application is a matter of personal preference.

Scent

Deodorant’s come in a variety of scents. Some are meant to leave you simply smell clean and fresh and others are meant to bring a particular prominent scent. Lavender, lemongrass, tea tree oil, aloe, and sage are some of the main ingredients used to add fragrance to deodorants. If you are looking for a subtle scent, melaleuca alternifolia (tea-tree oil) gives off that clean refreshing smell. It is an essential oil that acts as a natural fragrance that is often used in shampoo and conditioners as well.

Companies have also been able to combine natural fragrances to create different scents such as tropical breeze and spring fresh.

There is also the option to have a completely unscented deodorant that just works to fight odor by killing the odor-producing bacteria without additional scent.

 Ingredients

Natural deodorants have a range of ingredients that work together in different ways to help prevent body odor. Some of these ingredients are meant to give off a pleasant fragrance and others to reduce perspiring.

Antiperspirant ingredients include DMSO and Aluminum Chlorohydrate. They dissolve and absorb the sweat.

To reduce body odor, some deodorant’s use potassium alum, which is an astringent and antiseptic. It is meant to prevent bacterial growth and therefore help keep poor body odor from occurring. Others use sodium stearate because it is a kind of soap, helping to give the deodorant the proper texture and scent. Another way to reduce odor is with the salt, zinc ricinoleate.

Men/Women

People often choose their deodorant selection based strictly on gender, however, the only differences are the scent and sometimes the size of the applicator. If it is a roll on or stick, men’s deodorant will usually have a larger applicator than the women’s deodorant. When it comes to naturally scented deodorants, there are many deodorants that simply leave you smelling “clean” and can therefore work for either gender.
