melatonin for sleeplessness

Supplementing Melatonin, the so-called “hormone of darkness” has become a popular sleep remedy for those who suffer from an inability to fall asleep.  Darkness increases the melatonin production that occurs naturally in the body, but certain disruptions may cause it to stop doing it’s magic.

Jet lag, bright lights at night, stress, and other sleep zappers cause many people to suffer from sleeplessness.  Our bodies naturally produce about 0.3 mg a day, so starting with a 1 mg capsule might help those that are more sensitive.  Many callers at AllStarHealth.com have told us that just 1-3 mg is enough to give them a good nights rest.

Increases in Melatonin shouuld help maintain the body’s internal clock (our circadian rhythm), which is important for a consistent sleep cycle.  It is difficult to fall asleep at the same time every night , so if something has caused you to fall off schedule you should try supplementing Melatonin and see how it works for you.

The right dose should let you have a nice, restful sleep without any irritability or sluggishness during the day.  It doesn’t have the same effect as cold medicines, for example.  Melatonin won’t make you feel like you are dragging yourself around all day after you take it.  Experiment with dosage and always consult your physician about new supplements you want to try.
