What’s All this Stuff in my Multivitamin?
Women’s vitamins have evolved into pretty complex products. There are hundreds of different Multi’s on the market now, all of them containing some similarities and some big differences. I wanted to pick out some of the ingredients that I saw most often and find out more about them. So, that brings me to this week’s blog where I will begin to answer the question, “What is all this stuff in my multivitamin, and why do I need it?”
Ipriflavone – This is supposed to help prevent osteoporosis.
Chaste Tree Fruit – Berries from this fruit have been used as a symbol of chastity since early Greek days, and this ingredient is said to help with PMS and other menstrual issues like breast pain, cramping, etc.
Kudzu Root – This may lower cholesterol levels, help with menstrual issues like migraines and post-menopausal symptoms like hypertension and diabetes. It is also being studied for its’ use as a remedy for hangovers and to lessen the desire for alcohol.
Lycopene – Usually found in red tomatoes, used for its antioxidant qualities
Organic Spirulina – Spirulina is a great source of protein, essential fatty’s, vitamins and minerals. It is considered a great food source.
North Atlantic Kelp – This kelp is an essential mineral and food source that has been used in fertilizers for growing crops and also to feed live stock. It is very high in nutrients.
Zinc – Another essential mineral known for its antioxidant and anti-aging qualities. Zinc has also been said to lessen the severity of colds, to treat diaper rash, to prevent sunburns, hair loss and to promote healing.
Selenium – Another antioxidant that is said to help fight free radicals that cause cancer and heart disease. It is also used to properly utilize protein and hormones to help with hair loss.
Barley Grass Powder – This superfood is a complete nutritional source. Barley grass has many minerals, vitamins, and fiber. It contains a long list of vitamins like potassium, Calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese, zinc, beta carotene, B’s, and Vitamin C.
Coconopsis Root is a stimulant like Ginseng but less potent. It helps with energy levels, memory, stress, and digestive issues.
Dong Quai Root – Balances out the female hormone system, and has antispasmodic or sedative effects. It is said to help with menstrual issues, PMS, congestion. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant.
Schizandra Fruit – Used for increased energy, to lessen stress and insomnia. It is also thought to help with skin health, delay aging and promote overall well being. Schizandra is also taken to strengthen the liver and kidneys.
White Peony – Is said to help with blood toning (balancing) and help with irritability, muscle cramping, excessive menstrual flow or excessive sweating.
Astragalus Root – Assists with immune system, cardiovascular system and liver. It is also used to treat arthritis and nervous conditions.
Gynostemma – This herb is used for weight control, has antioxidant qualities, is an immunity booster and has been studied for its’ cancer fighting abilities.
L-Leucine – This is an essential amino acid which you can read more about in the past blog, Amino Acid Supplement Guide.
Rutin – Is a bioflavonoid which has anti-inflammatory qualities so it is good for hemorrhoids, circulation and varicose veins and mouth herpes. It is also an antioxidant.
Quercetin – Antioxidant used to neutralize free radicals, also to fight bad cholesterol, arthritis, and also to fight allergies like hay fever.
Boron – helps regulate levels of other minerals, estrogen levels, and is helpful in metabolism of hormones. It is being studied for its effects on memory and brain function, and for prevention of arthritis.
Vanadium – May affect blood sugar levels, and bone growth. This is still being studied.
Milk Thistle – Improves liver function.
Mangosteen – Fruit that promotes overall good health, relieve diarrhea and urinal disorders, and to regulate menstruation.
BioPerine – Has a thermogenic effect which promotes weight loss and is used by some as an appetite suppressant.
